Abstract
The project led by Anaïs Thibault Landry highlights the importance of the meaning that employees give to financial incentives and indicates that it is not merely monetary value that constitutes a source of motivation. The study is the first to illustrate a subjective aspect of compensation that had been overlooked: the symbolism that an employee attributes to a financial reward. The findings should provide food for thought for practitioners and researchers on the positioning of bonus systems. Employees' subjective perceptions of corporate practices, including compensation practices, should not be marginalized or neglected since they have a significant influence on employee behaviours and attitudes.
