Abstract

"Our production takes the form of an article that takes a critical look at the methodological aspects of several empirical studies on the use of history in the teaching of mathematics. Despite real excitement in the research community and the creation of numerous research groups, progress remains limited and many key questions remain. The analysis of seven studies enabled us to identify several methodological difficulties encountered by researchers in the field."

The history of mathematics occupies an important place in the Quebec education program. While many emphasize the importance of history in the teaching of mathematics in terms of motivation, the humanization of mathematics and providing cognitive support for students, the student-researcher's article shows that research does little to support these practices. His publication opens the way to rigorous empirical work in the emerging field of research into the use of mathematics history in the teaching of mathematics, work that would provide insight into the theoretical, didactic and pedagogical issues linked to this practice and make it possible to better meet the requirements of the Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sport concerning the cultural and historical components of education programs. In the long term, this will lead to higher quality, more coherent mathematics education.
