The research team La vie littéraire au Québec (The Literary Life of Quebec) aims at analyzing the literary phenomenon and its evolution as a whole, rather than establishing academic works or reputations.
Directed by Chantal Savoie from Université Laval, this research group is dedicated more specifically to the study of two cardinal principles in the evolution of the literary life of Quebec: building legitimacy and the move towards autonomy of literary practice. In the 20th century, the literary history of Quebec was characterized by the difficulty in obtaining an autonomous and legitimate cultural status in relation to other intellectual activities and other literatures, especially French literature, and other cultural productions, in particular those from popular and media culture.
At the centre of this historical exploration lies a firm desire to make the history of literature an interdisciplinary practice. Knowledge and expertise from the fields of history, feminist studies, cultural sociology and musicology, in particular, have come together to ensure a precise observation of the literary life of Quebec. The research carried out by this team has a significant impact, because it develops both knowledge and know-how, and reaches both the scientific and public sectors alike.
The first six volumes of the series La vie littéraire au Québec have already been published by Presses de l'Université Laval. The relevance of this undertaking has been confirmed as other projects have adopted the same approach, such as Histoire de la littérature en Suisse romande (Payot, 1996) and Histoire de la littérature française (Larousse, 2002). In Belgium, this methodology has also inspired the collaborative research project Étude critique et historique du patrimoine littéraire francophone en Belgique (Université de Liège / Université Libre de Bruxelles), as well as providing food for thought in numerous studies on Quebec literature.
