For many years the Canadian forestry sector has been experiencing a serious crisis that the Outaouais region has not managed to avoid. This context makes it necessary to conduct a study into high value-added production that could become the industry's lifeline.
L'Équipe de recherche sur la gouvernance des ressources naturelles et du territoire (Research Team on the Governance of Natural and Territorial Resources), directed by Guy Chiasson from Université du Québec en Outaouais, is attempting to understand the extent to which the regional structure put in place in Outaouais is conducive to the development of innovations that encourage high value-added production. The team is also seeking to determine the optimal conditions for a regional support program that is effective and adapted to the needs of the various actors in the forestry industry.
This research, carried out primarily by means of interviews with the industry's main actors, will help us to understand the motivations underlying the steps taken by forestry sector companies in reaction to the crisis, along with the factors that have allowed for innovation development. The researchers will also define the challenges and difficulties faced in taking these steps, which will help them to determine the real impact of these companies' development and innovation activities on the economic fabric of the Outaouais region. On the long term, the results of this project could enable the local high value-added industry to become more competitive on the global market.
The research team intends to widely disseminate its findings for the benefit of the regional forestry industry, and is planning eight communication activities with organizations and actors in regional development. The results will be presented on the Université du Québec en Outaouais website and during the university's Forum Recherche Innovation, and will be publicized through the Canada Economic Development Agency during its networking luncheons, seminars and scientific conferences.
