In Québec, almost all concert producers are music ensembles that acquire original content through commissions for seasonal programs. Simon Martin's work is focused on positioning the composer and the composer's creation at the core of a production project: a concert to be performed on tour. This mode of creation yields many positive impacts. First, more emphasis is placed on the research-creation process rather than the drive to fulfill one-time program needs (where substance precedes the medium). Second, in doing so, music gives itself the means to reclaim its favoured presentation format—the concert—as a cohesive whole rather than an assembly of pieces. Finally, the coherence of the concert fosters audience appreciation and, in the long term, the appreciation of art music.
